Massage Oils & Candles

Massage Oils & Candles

A aceite de masaje and a vela de masaje do the same job in different ways. The oil is ready and applied at room temperature; The candle is lit, melted and poured warm. Choosing between the two is more a matter of ritual than result.

How a massage candle works

It is the most common question, and the answer is in the wax. A massage candle does not contain paraffin but rather vegetable waxes and butters, usually soy, coconut or shea, whose melting point is around 45 to 50 degrees. That is well below that of a conventional decorative candle, which exceeds 60.

That's why molten oil can be poured onto the skin: it arrives warm, not hot. Even so, verification is mandatory. Let it burn for ten to fifteen minutes until it forms a liquid layer, turn off the flame, wait a few seconds and test a drop on the inside of your wrist before applying to any other area.

Never use a decorative candle for this. Paraffin melts at a much higher temperature and burns.

Oils: the difference is how long they last

What distinguishes a good massage oil from a mediocre one is not the perfume, it is the glide time before being absorbed.

Pure vegetable oils, such as sweet almond, jojoba or fractionated coconut, glide well and are gradually absorbed, leaving the skin hydrated. Those with a silicone fraction last longer but do not nourish. And those formulated only with mineral oils slide a lot and do not contribute anything to the skin.

For a complete back massage, calculate about 15 to 30 ml. That's quite a bit more than people typically wear, and falling short is the number one cause of uncomfortable mid-session friction.

The warning that almost no one gives

This point is important and rarely appears on product sheets.

Any oil-based product, including melted wax from a massage candle, degrades latex. This means that a latex condom in contact with oil loses integrity in a matter of seconds and is no longer a reliable barrier.

If the massage is to continue into something else, there are two solutions. Wash the area with soap and water first, or use polyurethane condoms, which do tolerate oil and are in Latex Free. And for direct intimate use, the correct thing is a lubricant formulated for it, from Water-Based, because the oil alters the vaginal flora.

The basic technique

Heat the oil by rubbing it between your hands before the first contact, because the cold makes the person tense and the first minutes are lost. Always work towards the heart, with an open palm and constant weight instead of finger pressure.

The common mistake is to start too hard. The first five minutes are of broad and superficial contact so that the tissue relaxes; deep pressure only works afterwards.

Aromas and sensitivity

If your skin is sensitive, test a small amount on your forearm and wait a few minutes before using the product all over your body. Citrus essential oils can increase sensitivity to sunlight for a few hours, so it is best to leave them for the night.

What to choose depending on the moment

Oil and candle do the same job, but one is ready in seconds and the other needs fifteen minutes notice. That is the variable that decides.

Moment Format Advance What it contributes
Improvised Oil in jar None Immediate slip
Planned Massage candle 10 to 15 minutes Ritual, light and heat
Long massage Almond oil None No need to reapply
Before getting dressed Lotion or dry oil None Absorbs quickly
Sensitive skin Unscented oil Try the day before Less risk of reaction

Frequently asked questions

Oil or candle?

The oil gains in immediacy and duration of the slide; The candle gains atmosphere and the sensation of the warm oil when poured. For a planned night, the candle; for everyday life, oil.

Can it be used with a condom?

No. Any oily product degrades latex in minutes. If there is a condom, the lubricant must be water-based or silicone.

What temperature does the wax reach?

Soy and coconut waxes melt between 40 and 50 degrees, close to body wax. Even so, the first drop is always tested on the forearm.

How do you protect the bed?

With a large towel under the body, that solves ninety percent of the problem. If oil falls on the sheet, absorb it with paper and sprinkle cornstarch before washing.

What to do with reactive skin?

Choose fragrance-free formulas and test them on your forearm the day before. Concentrated essential oils and citrus are the ones that produce the most reactions.
