Body Chains and Harnesses to Layer Over Lingerie or Bare Skin

A body chain is purchased by looking at the design and returned based on the size. It is a piece that rests on the body in several points at the same time, so the measurement matters as much as in a garment, and yet almost no one checks it before ordering.

The two measurements you need

A full body chain is held at the shoulders and waist, and you have to get both right.

The first measurement is the waist or hip circumference, depending on where the lower chain will rest. It is taken with the tape loosely adjusted, and you have to add two or three centimeters so that the piece falls without marking.

The second is the one that almost no one takes and the one that decides the result: the vertical distance from the shoulder, through the midpoint of the chest, to the waist. That number determines whether the harness stays taut or hangs. A difference of three centimeters between your torso and that of the model in the photo completely changes how the piece looks.

Always look for models with an extension chain, those loose links at the end of the closure. They usually give between two and three inches of room and turn a one-size-fits-all into something that really fits.

The formats

  • Cadena de cintura sola. The most discreet format and the one that works best under clothing. It is worn daily without problem.
  • Arnés de torso. Combines waist chain with straps that go up the chest and shoulders. It is the most visual and the one that requires the most precision in carving.
  • Cadena de muslo. Worn on the leg, alone or in pairs. The critical measurement is the contour of the thigh at the point where it will rest, not at the widest point.
  • Cadenas conectadas a otras piezas. They unite necklace, waist and sometimes wrists in a single set.

Metal: what lasts and what doesn't

Here is the real price difference within the category, and it deserves to be explained.

Surgical stainless steel is the safest option for sensitive skin and will not rust or fade. Sterling silver performs well but darkens with sweat and needs periodic cleaning. Gold plating depends entirely on the thickness of the layer: a thin plating wears off in weeks of continuous use, while a thick plating lasts for years.

If you have a sensitivity to nickel, and it is more common than it seems, check that the piece indicates that it is nickel-free. The joyas para el cuerpo are in prolonged contact with areas where there is sweat and friction, which is exactly the combination that triggers an allergic contact reaction.

A practical sign of quality: look at the closure. A solid carabiner and welded rings indicate a level of finish that matches the rest of the piece; a thin spring closure is the first thing to fail.

How to wear it

On bare skin is what the piece looks like in its cleanest version. On lingerie, it works better with smooth mesh or satin garments than with highly worked lace, because the metal competes with the relief of the lace. The range is in Complete Lingerie Sets and in Bodysuits.

Under fine clothing, a small link cadena para el cuerpo appears unmarked. Under tight knit garments, any chain with volume is visible, so the waist-only format is suitable there.

Always put it on last, when you are already dressed, and take it off first. This is what prevents it from getting caught in the socket, which is how almost all of them break.

Be careful

Remove it before showering, swimming and applying creams or perfume. Chlorine attacks the metallic bath and the alcohol in perfumes tarnishes it. Wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth after each use and store it spread out or hanging, never in a pile: thin chains knot themselves and untangling them is what deforms them.

Other ornament options are in Nipple Covers and Suspender Sets.

Frequently asked questions

How do you size a body chain?

With two measurements: the hip contour where the lower chain will rest and the height of the torso from the shoulder to that same line. The second is the one that most purchases fail.

Which metal holds up best?

Stainless steel and thick-plated brass. Fine alloy platings lose color with sweat and perfumes, especially in pieces that continually rub against the skin.

Can it be worn under clothes?

Waist chains do, and they are practically not noticeable. Body chains and harnesses look under light fabrics, so they work better on the garment or on the skin.

How do you prevent the lace from snagging?

Checking that the closures and links have no edges and always placing the piece after the garment, never before. Flat link chains are the least snagging.

How are they cleaned?

Dry cloth after each use to remove sweat, and stored individually in a cloth bag. Stored humidity is what darkens bathrooms in a matter of weeks.
