The sign that replaces the word

We start with what is important. With a gag in place, the safe word does not exist, so an alternative must be agreed upon before putting it on.

The two that work are simple. Putting a small object in the hand of the person carrying it, with the rule that letting go means stopping immediately. Or agree to three consecutive taps with your foot or hand on an audible surface.

The types and what each one allows

Ball gag

The most recognizable. A sphere held by a strap that keeps the mouth open. The diameter completely changes the experience: between 3.5 and 4 centimeters is an introductory size, and above 5 the jaw gets tired in a few minutes.

Look for perforated versions, with holes running through the ball, because they make breathing through the mouth easier and reduce saliva buildup.

Strip or tape gag

A flat band of silicone or leather that passes between the teeth without forcing the opening. It is the most comfortable option and the one that produces the least fatigue, so it is the best to start with and for long scenes.

Ring gag

A ring that keeps the mouth open without occupying it. It allows more sound and more access than the ball.

Muzzle

It covers the lower part of the face and may or may not have an inner piece. It mainly provides a visual and containment component, and its critical point is that it does not compress the nose.

Gag with head strap

Complete harness systems. They are the safest in terms of support and the ones that take the longest to remove, and that slowness is just what you have to take into account.

Saliva, which no one mentions

Any gag that keeps the mouth open prevents normal swallowing, so drooling is inevitable and is not a product failure.

It is solved with a towel at hand and with a posture slightly leaning forward instead of lying face up, which is the one that generates the most discomfort. And it explains why gag sessions are often shorter than people expect.

Time limits and contraindications

The jaw fatigues quickly. Ten to twenty minutes is a reasonable range for a ball gag, and it is best to remove it and take a break before joint pain develops.

There are situations in which no gag should be used: nasal congestion or any breathing difficulties, known jaw joint problems, nausea, or alcohol consumption. The rule is simple: if breathing through the nose is not comfortable, the gag is not put on.

And a rule without exceptions: never leave the gagged person alone, not even for a minute. Have blunt-tipped scissors on hand if there are straps.

Materials and cleaning

Leather straps provide strength and fine adjustment, and nylon or neoprene straps are easier to clean.
