The correct amount is more than you think

The usual reference, a few drops, falls short in almost all uses. As a starting point:

• Vaginal use: an amount the size of a hazelnut, distributed and not deposited in one point.
• Use with a toy: cover the entire surface that is going to enter, plus a little at the entrance.
• Anal use: much more, at least the size of a walnut, and replenishing without waiting to notice friction.
• Use with a condom: a drop inside the tip before putting it on and the rest on the outside.

That inner drop is the detail that changes the sensation the most with a condom and the one that almost no one applies. One is enough: more than that makes the condom slip.

Where to put it

Applying only on the toy or condom leaves the entrance dry, which is exactly where the sensitivity is concentrated. The sequence that works is the other way around: first on the body, then on what is introduced.

And warming it between your hands a few seconds before avoids the small shock of cold contact, which is more disruptive than it seems.

Reapply without cutting the moment

With water-based, reapplication is part of normal use, it is not a sign that the product is bad. There is a trick that avoids opening the bottle halfway: a few drops of water or a little saliva on the area reactivate the lubricant that has already been applied, because what has happened is that the watery part has evaporated, not that the product has disappeared.

If you have to reapply more than two or three times per session, the formula falls short and the logical jump is to a Hybrid Lubricants or one of Silicone-Based.

Situations that require a specific formula

Dryness due to hormonal changes or medication

Vaginal dryness associated with menopause, breastfeeding, hormonal contraceptives or certain medications responds best to formulas without glycerin, without perfume and with moderate osmolality, because the objective is not to add irritation to already sensitive tissue. If the problem is persistent, a health professional can assess whether a vaginal moisturizer is also appropriate, which is a different product that is used regularly.

Pregnancy search

Most conventional lubricants are not formulated to be compatible with sperm, because the pH and osmolality that respect the mucosa are not the same as those that respect sperm motility. If you are looking to get pregnant, look for an explicit indication of fertility compatibility on the label and consult your healthcare professional.

Reactive skin

The three ingredients that produce the most reactions are perfume, sensation agents such as menthol or capsaicin, and preservatives from the paraben family. A short, unscented formula is the safe bet, and a test on the forearm the day before clears up the doubt in twenty minutes.

Conservation and expiration

An unopened lubricant lasts two to three years; once opened, the usual time is twelve months, and the packaging indicates this with an open jar symbol and a number followed by the letter M.

Store it away from direct heat and light, closed, and with the dispenser clean. Pump or single-dose formats are much less contaminated than those with open caps, because the finger does not come into contact with the content.

Signs that it should be thrown away: phase separation that is not recovered when shaking, change in odor, grainy texture or color different from the original.

A note about travel

In the cabin, the limit of 100 ml per container applies, so pocket formats and single doses are the practical option. And in hot climates, avoid leaving the bottle in the car: the sustained heat separates the emulsions, especially the hybrid ones.
