A toy that has lost power is almost never damaged: the usual thing is that the battery is below the voltage that the motor needs. This section solves that problem, and it's a good idea to know what to order before blindly buying.

Identify what your toy needs

The formats that appear in this category are four and are recognized at a glance.

  • AA y AAA. The usual cylindrical ones, 1.5 volts. They appear in medium and large sized vibrators and in most devices with two or three batteries.
  • Pilas de botón, tipo LR44 o AG13. Flat and small, 1.5 volts. They are those with vibrating bullets, rings and compact eggs. They usually go in groups of three or four stacked.
  • Pilas N, también llamadas LR1. Cylindrical and shorter than an AAA. Less common and harder to find in a supermarket, so it is a good idea to have spares if your device uses them.
  • Baterías internas de litio. They are not replaced; They are recharged by cable or magnetic connector.

If you don't know which one you are carrying, the compartment itself usually has the reference engraved on it, and in the button models you just have to count how many there are and read the code printed on the edge of one of them.

Why do button batteries last so little?

It is the most repeated complaint and has a simple technical explanation.

A button battery has very little capacity, between 100 and 150 milliamp hours, compared to 1,000 or 1,200 for an alkaline AAA. A vibration motor consumes a lot, so that tank empties in a short time by design, not by product defect.

Furthermore, the voltage drops progressively, and since the intensity of vibration depends directly on the voltage, the device feels weaker long before it turns off. If your button toy has lost power, change the batteries before thinking about returning it.

A practical detail: change them all at the same time and of the same type. Mixing a new one with two used ones causes the new one to discharge against the others.

Alkaline or rechargeable

The alkaline ones give 1.5 volts and the rechargeable nickel metal hydride ones give 1.2. That difference of three tenths is noticeable in the maximum power of a motor, so the same toy vibrates a little less with rechargeables.

In return, the rechargeable ones maintain the voltage almost constant until exhausted, while the alkaline ones decrease from the first minute. In practice this means that a rechargeable one offers a more stable experience throughout the session, even if its ceiling is somewhat lower.

For a frequently used device, rechargeable ones are much cheaper and generate a fraction of the waste. For one that is used occasionally, alkalines are best kept unused.

Chargers and connectors

In models with internal battery there are three systems.

The two-pin conector magnético is the most common in submersible toys, because it allows the body to be completely sealed. Its disadvantage is that the cable is specific to each model and losing it leaves the device useless, so a compatible replacement is a sensible purchase.

The USB-C makes life easier because the cable is universal, but it requires a gasket or rubber cap for sealing, and that cap is the point that fails the most over time.

The base de carga por inducción is the most waterproof and the least damaged, and usually comes with high-end models.

Care and conservation

Remove the batteries if you are going to store a toy for more than a month. A spent alkaline can leak, and the potassium hydroxide it leaves behind ruins the contacts irreversibly; that white powder in the compartment is exactly that.

Charge lithium batteries before they run out completely and avoid leaving them discharged for weeks. If you are going to store the device for a while, leave it half charged.

Always charge the device with it dry and at room temperature, never freshly washed. And used batteries go to a collection point, never to common trash.

A nickel rechargeable battery delivers 1.2 volts compared to 1.5 volts for an alkaline battery, so in demanding motors the sensation may be somewhat lower even if the battery is full.
