Massage Candles

A vela de masaje differs from a normal candle in one specific and very important thing: the melting point of the wax. It is formulated with vegetable waxes and butters that melt at around 40 to 45 degrees, a warm and safe temperature on the skin. A decorative paraffin candle melts above 60 degrees and burns. The difference is not marketing, it is physical.

What to look for on the label is a vegetable base, nutritious butters and absence of paraffin. If the product does not explicitly state that it is intended to be applied to the skin, it is not.

How to use

Light it and let it burn for ten to fifteen minutes, until a uniform liquid layer forms around the wick. Turn off the flame before pouring, always. First test a few drops on the inside of your own wrist or forearm to check the temperature, and then pour from about eight inches above the shoulders, back or legs, which is where the skin is thickest.

Work the oil with your hands while it is warm. The wax turns into body oil on contact and is absorbed, leaving skin hydrated rather than greasy if the amount is right.

Where it does not apply

Not on genital and mucosal areas, and not internally either. It is formulated for external skin. Also avoid the face, areas with wounds or irritation and recently shaved skin, which reacts much more easily.

And a compatibility that should be kept in mind: as it contains oils, it should not be used with latex or polyisoprene condoms, because it deteriorates them. If you are going to use a condom, keep the candle for the massage and use a separate compatible lubricant, from Water-Based.

Flame safety

Trim the wick to about five millimeters before each lighting to prevent smoke and sputtering. Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from fabrics, curtains and anything that could fall on it. Do not leave it on unattended or use it in bed with a live flame. The container becomes hot, so handle it by the base or wait a moment before moving it.

Quantity, fabrics and conservation

It performs much more than it seems, and too much leaves the skin greasy and stains the bedding. A towel underneath solves the problem, and oil stains are washed off at high heat. How much it yields and how it is used

A one hundred gram candle gives between four and six complete back massages. Yield depends on the size of the melted wax puddle rather than the total weight, so it is a good idea to let the puddle reach the edge of the container before pouring the first time.

If poured before, the wax is consumed, forming a tunnel in the center and all subsequent sessions yield less. Ten or fifteen minutes of waiting for the first use makes the difference for the entire life of the candle.

Aromas and sensitive skin

The aromas of these candles are perceived more when melted than when cold, so a fragrance that seems discreet in the store can be intense in a closed room. For small spaces, mild or unscented versions are more appreciated.

If the skin is reactive, it is advisable to pour the first drop on the forearm and wait a few minutes before continuing. Concentrated essential oils and citrus are the ones that produce the most reactions.
