The opening and its finish

The opening can be simply without a central seam or finished with lace or elastic trim. The finish matters because a raw edge will fray in just a few washes.

Also check if the opening is flat when worn. In very elastic fabrics without trim it tends to open more than expected, and that changes the visual result quite a bit.

The size is decided on the bra

In a set, the piece that fails the most is the top one. If the bra has a cup with underwire, follow the brand's table; If it has a soft or triangular crown, there is more margin.

Many sets are sold in a stretchy one-size-fits-all, which works well in the mid-range but not at the extremes. If you're outside that range, look for true-to-size versions with adjustable straps.

What to look for in the finish

Overall, quality is seen in three specific points. The first is the lace: sewn to the piece and not glued, because the glue comes off with the first wash. The second are the straps, with metal adjustment instead of plastic, which is what breaks. The third is the finishing of the opening, with fine elastic or sewn lace, never an open cut.

To these three, a fourth is added in models with a shaft: one that is lined and ends in a rounded tip. A rod that sticks out with use ruins the garment and cannot be fixed.

How to choose the size of the set

The reference is the bra, because it is the piece with the least margin. You measure the underbust circumference for the band and the chest circumference for the cup, and that combination decides the size of the entire outfit. If the pair of panties is small, many models allow you to order them separately.

When the set includes a garter belt, it is worth checking if the garters are adjustable in all four positions. It is what allows the height to be adapted to the leg, and without that the stockings pull or fall, which is the most common fault of these outfits.

What does the garter belt add?
