Bodysuits

Bodysuits

A body de lingerie has one structural advantage over any two-piece set: the solid line. No waist band, no mid-height horizontal cut, no fabric that rolls up when sitting and nothing to mark under clothing. That's the real reason I style it, beyond the fit.

Three types with different uses

  • Body de lingerie. In lace, tulle or satin, with hook and eye closure at the crotch. Designed to be seen, not to be worn under clothes.
  • Bodysuit de vestir. In opaque fabric with some elastane, designed to be worn as a top garment with pants, skirt or suit. It never wrinkles or comes out of the pants, which is its great virtue.
  • Body moldeador. With compression fabric in specific areas. The range is at Corsets.

Many body sexy pieces work in all three registers depending on how they are combined, and that is where much of their value lies.

The crotch closure: look at this detail

It is the point that decides whether a garment of this type is practical or uncomfortable, and it is almost never highlighted on the sheet.

Three-position hooks allow you to adjust the overall length of the body, which is exactly what you need whether you have a long or short torso. Those with a single position do not give room. And the models with a zipper closure or with a simple opening, without closure, are much more comfortable if you are going to wear the garment for many hours.

The number of brackets also matters: two or three hold the tension without opening on their own, one comes loose with movement.

The measure that must be taken and no one takes

A bodysuit fits badly, when it fits badly, for one reason only: torso length, and that measurement does not appear on any standard size chart.

Take it like this: from the shoulder point, across the front of the chest, to the crotch, and then back to the same shoulder point across the back. If this measurement exceeds what the garment provides, the bodysuit will pull down the neckline and up the crotch, even if the chest and hip contours are correct.

The solution is not to go up in size, because that widens without lengthening. Look for models with adjustable straps and multi-position closures, which absorb that difference.

Support according to the cup

Bodysuits without internal structure work well up to cup B. From cup C, look for models with a molded cup, underwire or with a reinforced lower band, because a thin strap over elastic fabric does not support and ends up marking the shoulder.

Those with a lining in the cup are also the only ones that can be worn under a light shirt without being transparent.

How to wear

As an outer garment, an opaque bodysuit under a blazer or with high-waisted pants works perfectly and is the most versatile option in this collection. As lingerie, it wins combined with stockings and a garter belt from Stockings & Garter Belts. And the lighter and more transparent versions are in Teddies and Body Stockings.

Wash

By hand, cold water, neutral soap, with the brackets fastened so that they do not snag the fabric. Without twisting: press between a towel and dry horizontally. Never hang a wet bodysuit from the strap, because the weight of the water permanently deforms the elastic. The full range is at Lingerie.

The types, compared

Body, teddy and bodystocking are easily confused, and yet they are used in different contexts.

Type Closing Fastening Under clothes Ideal for
Opaque bodysuit Brackets With or without ring Perfect, uncut Daily use
Lace bodysuit Brackets Light It becomes transparent Occasion
Teddy Brackets or open Light Not intended to be worn underneath Sheer lingerie
Bodystocking Without closure or open None No Full Body Coverage
Open bodysuit Open crotch Variable No Couple game

Full-length mesh versions are at Body Stockings and open-crotch versions at Crotchless Bodysuits.

Fabric, lining and why they matter

A bodysuit lives on its elastane. Between 8 and 12% gives enough recovery for the garment to return to its shape after several hours on; Below that figure, the piece gives in at the waist and crotch and does not return.

The front lining changes two things: opacity, obvious, and comfort, less obvious. A cotton lining in the crotch area is what allows the bodysuit to be worn all day without discomfort, and its absence is the reason why many lace models are left for short use.

Frequently asked questions

What measurement must be taken to get the size right?

The height of the torso, from the shoulder to the crotch, passing in front and behind. It is the measurement that decides whether the bodysuit pulls down, and almost no table explicitly asks for it.

What is the purpose of closing brackets?

To avoid having to remove the entire garment when going to the bathroom and to slightly adjust the torso height. Three rows of brackets give more leeway than just one.

Does a bodysuit show under your clothes?

An opaque bodysuit with a smooth cut is the garment that shows the least, because it does not have a waist band. The lace does show through under thin, light fabrics.

Does it hold enough with a large cup?

Only models with underwire, molded cups or wide, adjustable straps. An unstructured spaghetti strap bodysuit does not support beyond a B cup, no matter how good it feels.

How do you wash it?

By hand, in cold water, with neutral soap, or in a mesh bag on a delicate program. Dry horizontally in the shade and never in a dryer, which is what destroys the elastane.
