The fine ones and the textured ones

An ultra-thin condom is no more fragile: it passes the same tightness and burst pressure tests as a standard one. What changes is the thermal sensation and the perception of contact.

Ribbed and dotted ones add relief for increased stimulation, and work best with additional lubricant. If there is sensitive skin involved, the texture can be annoying and it is advisable to try a single model first before purchasing a large box.

Flavors and retardants

The flavored ones are formulated for oral sex. Many include sugars in the lubricant, so they are not the best option for prolonged vaginal use, although they protect just the same.

Retardants have a small amount of benzocaine inside the tip. They reduce the sensitivity of the wearer and, if transferred, also that of the partner, something that should be known beforehand. They are not used if there is an allergy to local anesthetics.

Quantity, expiration and allergies

The size, in two measurements

The size of a condom is not the length, it is the nominal width, the measurement of the condom stretched flat. Standard sizes are around 52 or 53 millimeters, narrow ones go down to 49 and wide ones go up to 56 or 60. A condom that is too wide slips and one that is too narrow becomes tight and uncomfortable, and both cases increase the risk of failure.

To find out which one corresponds, the erect circumference is measured and divided by two. That figure, in millimeters, is the nominal width to look for in the box, and with it half of the problems in this category end.

What to do if it breaks

It is interrupted, carefully removed and not replaced with another without first washing the area with water. From there, the two useful routes are emergency contraception, which is more effective the sooner it is taken, and a health consultation to assess screening for sexually transmitted infections depending on the case.

Breakages almost always have a specific cause: lack of lubricant, wrong size, use of oily products with latex or an expired expiration date. Reviewing these four points prevents it from happening again.

With what lubricant

With latex, water-based or silicone; never oil, Vaseline or hand cream, which degrade the material in a matter of minutes. Condoms are already lubricated, but an extra drop on the outside reduces friction, which is the main cause of breakage, and another small one on the inside of the tip improves sensation without compromising fit.

How many to buy

A box of twelve covers the usual use of a few weeks and avoids the moment when they run out just when they are needed. Buying very large boxes only pays off if they are going to be used before the expiration date, which is usually three to five years from manufacture.
