Massage Oils & Candles

Buying the aceite de masaje or the candle is the easy part. What separates a relaxing massage from one that is half done is the preparation, the distribution of time and a few logistical details that are almost never told.

The preparation that decides the result

The temperature of the room matters more than the product. A body lying still and still loses heat quickly, and below about 22 degrees the muscles do not loosen no matter how much you insist. Turn up the heat before you start and have a towel to cover the area you are not working on.

Also prepare what you will need within reach: the open product, two towels and something for your hands. Getting up halfway breaks the state that has taken you twenty minutes to build.

And take off your rings and watch, and check your nails. It is the detail that most often spoils the first contact.

How to divide time

A reasonable full body massage lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. A cast that works:

  • Espalda y hombros, de 15 a 20 minutos. This is where the tension is concentrated and where it is best to start. You need between 15 and 30 ml of product.
  • Piernas y pies, de 10 a 15 minutos. Always work from the bottom up. About 10 ml per leg.
  • Brazos y manos, 5 minutos. Little product and long movements.
  • Cuello y cuero cabelludo, 5 minutos. Almost without oil, and it is the area that returns the most per minute invested.
  • Frente del cuerpo, de 10 a 15 minutos. Much lighter pressure than on the back.

The product figure is the most surprising. Falling short creates friction and drag, which is exactly the opposite of what you want.

Calibrate pressure without asking every two minutes

Constantly asking if things are going well brings the person out of a state of relaxation. A better system is to agree in advance on a scale of one to ten, where five is the target pressure, and ask that you only talk if something falls outside that range. Thus communication exists but does not interrupt.

The physical rule is simple: the pressure comes from the weight of the body leaning forward, not from the strength of the fingers. If your hands get tired in five minutes, you're pushing instead of leaning.

Which product for what

A vela de masaje provides the ritual element of light and heat and produces a denser and more nutritious oil, ideal for specific areas such as the back or feet. It yields less volume, so for a full body it is usually necessary to combine it with oil.

An oil is more practical for large surfaces, allows for precise dosing and is cheaper per session. Those with sweet almond, jojoba or fractionated coconut glide and nourish; Those formulated with silicone last longer but do not harm the skin.

Sheets, towels and stains

This is the part that no one mentions and the one that most often decides whether a massage is repeated.

Oil stains, and vegetable oil stains oxidize over time and turn yellowish if not treated soon. Place a large cotton towel over the sheet, or an old sheet meant just for this.

If a stain appears, the method that works is to cover it with cornstarch or talcum powder for twenty minutes to absorb the excess, remove the dust, apply a few drops of dishwashing detergent directly to the fabric, rub gently and wash at the highest temperature that the garment supports. Doing it on the same day completely changes the result.

Two notices

Any oil-based product, including melted wax, degrades the latex, so if the massage continues it is best to wash the area first or use a compatible barrier.

And if your skin is reactive, test a small amount on your forearm the day before. Citrus essential oils may increase sensitivity to sunlight for a few hours.

Plant-based options are at Natural & Organic, and mechanical massage heads at Massage Wands.

Oil, candle or lotion

The three formats serve the same purpose but behave differently in the hand and on the sheet. This table summarizes the choice.

Format Temperature Slip Cleaning Best for
Vegetable oil Environment Very long Leaves a mark on fabric Long back massage
Dry oil spray Environment Medium Easy Short sessions
Massage candle Warm when pouring Long Medium Ritual and environment
Lotion Environment Short Very easy Massage before dressing
Edible oil Environment Medium Easy Game with flavor

The massage candle is extinguished and you wait a moment before pouring: the soy or coconut wax melts at a low temperature, but you should always test the first drop on your forearm. Scented variants are at Massage Candles.

Frequently asked questions

Burn a massage candle?

It shouldn't. They are formulated with waxes with a low melting point, around body temperature. Still, turn off the flame, wait a few seconds and taste the first drop on your forearm.

Can massage oil be used as a lubricant?

Not with a latex condom, because it degrades it in minutes. For internal use, a lubricant formulated for this is better; The oil stays on the skin, which is where it works well.

How do you remove oil stains from sheets?

Absorbing first with paper without rubbing, sprinkling cornstarch or talcum powder to remove the rest of the grease and then washing at 40 degrees with detergent. A large towel under the body avoids the entire problem.

How long should a massage last?

Between twenty and forty minutes works better than a long, poorly distributed session. Spend half the time on your back and shoulders, which is where the tension is concentrated, and always end with decreasing pressure.

What oil is best for sensitive skin?

A simple plant-based one, with no added fragrance or concentrated essential oils. Shortlist products are at Natural & Organic.
