Two-strap designs are the most stable because the thigh straps stop the toy pivoting upward under pressure. Briefs are the most comfortable for extended wear and the easiest to put on, but the panel needs to be reinforced or the toy will droop.

Getting the Fit Right

Measure your waist or hips where the band will actually sit, which is usually lower than you think, and check that measurement against the size chart rather than against your clothing size. Most harnesses adjust across a range, and being in the middle of that range is better than being at the top of it.

Tighten more than feels natural. A harness set to a comfortable everyday tension will move. It should feel firm and snug, close to the point of being tight, while still letting you breathe normally and without any strap digging in hard enough to leave marks.

Position the O-ring so the toy sits roughly where a natural angle would put it, which for most people is slightly higher than instinct suggests. Too low and the toy points downwards and is difficult to use.

O-Rings and Compatibility

Most quality harnesses come with three interchangeable rings, typically around 38mm, 44mm and 51mm. The right ring grips the neck of the dildo just above the base, holding it upright with no tilt and no pinching.

Silicone rings grip better and are gentler on the toy. Metal rings are more rigid and hold heavier toys more firmly but can mark silicone over time. Rubber O-rings are the cheapest and stretch out.

Check your intended dildo has a flat, wide base before buying either. Sculpted testicle bases frequently will not seat in a standard ring.

Materials

Nylon and polyester webbing is durable, fully adjustable, machine washable and the most practical choice for most people. Leather is stronger, moulds to the body over time and looks the part, but needs conditioning and cannot be washed conventionally. Faux leather offers the look without the maintenance and without animal materials. Fabric briefs and boxers are the most comfortable and the least adjustable.

Whatever the material, look at the hardware. Metal buckles and D-rings outlast plastic clips, and the stitching around the O-ring panel is where a cheap harness fails first.

Using One Well

Wear it and walk around before anything else happens. This tells you immediately whether the straps are set correctly and whether anything is going to chafe, and it is much easier to adjust before a partner is involved.

Communication replaces sensation. The wearer feels pressure through the harness but nothing through the shaft, so verbal check-ins are how you know what is working. Start slowly and build.

Consider a harness with a bullet vibrator pocket, or a vibrating Strap-On Dildos that transmits through the base. There is no reason the wearer should be doing all the work for none of the sensation.

Use plenty of water-based Lubricants with silicone toys, and thick anal lubricant if you are pegging.

Care

Fabric and nylon harnesses can usually be hand washed in warm water with mild soap and air dried away from direct heat. Check the label before machine washing, and remove O-rings first.

Leather should be wiped with a damp cloth, dried naturally and conditioned occasionally. Never soak it and never dry it on a radiator, which cracks the surface.

Wash O-rings separately with a Toy Cleaners & Essentials, and let everything dry completely before storing. Damp webbing stored in a drawer develops a smell that does not come out.
