What exactly changes

The thickness of a standard condom is around 0.060 to 0.070 millimeters. A reinforced one is between 0.085 and 0.100.

All of them, including the fine ones, pass the same tests of the EN ISO 4074 standard: air pressure until bursting, tensile strength and absence of pores. A thin condom is not a weak condom, it is one that performs with less material.

What the extra thickness provides is margin against sustained friction and handling. That is why it makes sense in long sessions, in anal penetration and when psychological comfort weighs as much as technique.

##What really causes breakages

This is the point that changes the purchasing decision, because thickness is the third cause, not the first.

The first is the lack of lubricant. Dry friction generates heat and tension at one point, and that is where the latex gives way. A standard condom with plenty of lubricant is safer than a dry reinforced condom.

The second is the size. A condom that is too tight works at the limit of its elasticity all the time; one that is too wide slips and wrinkles. The information to look at is the nominal width, which appears on the box in millimeters and usually ranges from 49 to 60. It is calculated by measuring the erect circumference and dividing by two.

The third is air trapped in the tip, which creates a pressure point. It is solved by pinching the tank with two fingers when placing it.

The error that voids all protection

Using two condoms at the same time, seeking more security, does just the opposite. The two latex surfaces rub against each other, generating friction and heat, and the probability of breakage increases rather than decreases.

The same thing happens when combining an external condom with an internal one. One is used, and only one.

Compatible lubricant

Water, silicone and hybrid bases work with latex. What never works is anything oil-based, not massage oil, not body cream, not Vaseline, because they degrade the latex in a matter of seconds.

Conservation, which degrades more than use

A condom expires, and it does so sooner if it is stored incorrectly.

Sustained heat, light and pressure are the three enemies. That's why carrying one loose in your purse for months is a bad idea: the constant friction against the packaging and body heat degrade it long before the printed date.

Store them in a cool, dry place, check the date before using them and discard any packaging that is wrinkled, perforated or without the air bubble that indicates it is sealed. Open it with your fingers along the serrated edge, never with your teeth or scissors.
