Massage Oils

All massage oils glide. What differentiates them is how long they do so before being absorbed, and that information depends on the carrier oil, which is the ingredient that appears first on the list and the one that almost no one looks at.

Carriers, ordered by duration

  • Almendra dulce. Classic balance. It glides on well for about twenty minutes and is then absorbed, leaving the skin soft. It is the safest starting point for a general purpose aceite de masaje.
  • Coco fraccionado. Lightweight, odorless, does not get rancid and is the easiest to wash from clothing. It is absorbed somewhat before the almond.
  • Jojoba. Technically it is a liquid wax, not an oil, and its composition is very similar to the skin's natural sebum. It absorbs quickly, so it is not the best option for a long massage, but it is best suited for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
  • Semilla de uva. Very light and quickly absorbed. It is the option for those who cannot stand the greasy feeling.
  • Con fracción de silicona. The longest lasting of all because it is not absorbed, although it does not nourish and must be removed with soap.

How much oil do you really need?

Much more than what people say. For a full back, between 15 and 30 ml, which is about three or four teaspoons. For a full body massage, between 50 and 80 ml.

Falling short is the number one mistake in home massage, because in the middle of the session friction appears and you have to interrupt to replace it, just when the other person was beginning to relax. It is preferable to go a little overboard.

Warming it up changes the session

An oil at room temperature is below skin temperature, and the first cold contact causes a reflex contraction that takes several minutes to undo.

There are two easy ways to avoid it. The first is to pour the oil into your palm and rub it between your hands for a few seconds before touching. The second, if the session is going to be long, is to leave the bottle in a container with hot water for five minutes, always checking the temperature inside the wrist before applying. Never use the microwave: it heats unevenly and creates hot spots.

The aceite de masaje erótico and its limits

Products in this category usually include aromas, a kissable format or heating effects. Two warnings that rarely appear on the label.

The first: any oil-based product degrades latex in seconds, so a latex condom is no longer a reliable barrier as soon as it comes into contact with it. If there is going to be a condom, you have to wash the area first or use polyurethane, from Latex Free.

The second: a aceite de masaje sensual is not an intimate lubricant. The oil alters the balance of the vaginal flora and is difficult to eliminate from the mucosa. For internal use, the correct thing is a product formulated for it, from Water-Based.

Essential oils: proportions and precautions

If you want to customize a neutral oil, the safe dilution is around 1% or 2%, which is equivalent to about six to twelve drops of essential oil per 30 ml of carrier. More concentration does not contribute anything and can irritate.

Two specific precautions: citrus oils increase sensitivity to sunlight for several hours, so better at night; and during pregnancy there are essential oils that are not recommended, so a neutral carrier without aromas is the prudent option.

Always test a small amount on your forearm if your skin is sensitive, and wait a few minutes before applying all over your body.

Frequently asked questions

How much oil do you need?

One tablespoon for a full back, spread between the hands before touching the skin. The excess does not improve the glide, it only ends up on the sheet.

Can it be used as a lubricant?

For external use yes, for internal use it is not ideal and with a latex condom it is ruled out, because the oil degrades it in minutes.

How is it heated?

Rub the oil between your hands for a few seconds, or leave the bottle in a bowl of warm water. Never in the microwave, which heats unevenly.

What proportion of essential oil is safe?

As a general reference, between 1 and 2% on the carrier, that is, about five drops per 25 ml. Citrus fruits are photosensitizing and should be avoided before sunbathing.

How do you remove stains?

Absorbing first with paper without rubbing, sprinkling cornstarch or talcum powder to remove grease and then washing at 40 degrees. A large towel under the body avoids the problem.
