How to measure yourself well

You need a tape measure and a mirror.

First measure the contour just under the chest, with the tape tight and horizontal, exhaling. That number is your band. Then measure the contour over the fullest part, loosely and with your back straight.

The difference between the two is the cup: about 12 centimeters are equivalent to cup A, 14 to B, 16 to C, 18 to D and 20 to E. Round the band to the nearest even number.

The classic mistake is to wear the band too wide and compensate with a small cup. The band does most of the holding work, not the straps, which is why a loose band rides up your back as soon as you raise your arms.

The sister size, which solves the out-of-stock sizes

This trick almost never appears on the cards and works constantly.

If your size is not available, there is a volume equivalence: go down a band and go up a cup, or vice versa. A 90B has approximately the same cup volume as an 85C and a 95A. The sensation changes, because the band tightens more or less, but the chest fits the same.

It is especially useful in lingerie, where the size range is usually shorter than in everyday underwear.

What each style contributes

• Balconet. Cut-out cup and separate straps. Lifts and creates horizontal neckline. It works best with medium volume breasts.
• Push-up. Filling at the bottom and outside of the cup to gather and lift. It provides shape, not support.
• Triángulo sin aro. Soft and unstructured. Comfortable and widely used in lace, although it gives little support from a C cup.
• Bralette. Unstructured lace garment designed to be seen. Worn alone or under open clothing.
• Bustier y corselete. Long body that structures from the chest to the waist. It is the option with the most support of all.
• Sujetador abierto. Cropped or missing cup, with the ring and band structure intact. Designed to display, not to hold.

The five-point test

When it arrives, check it out like this before deciding if it works for you.

The band has to be horizontal, no higher in the back, and fastened in the loosest bracket, because the fabric gives way with use and the other brackets are the reserve. The rings should rest on the ribs and surround all the breast tissue, without resting on top of it. The center of the bra should touch the breastbone. The straps hold only ten percent of the weight: if they're straining your shoulder, the band isn't doing its job. And there should be neither overflow from the top nor empty space in the glass.

Materials and what to expect from each one

The elastic lace fits well and forgives small differences in size. The rigid French style lace defines the shape much better but does not give anything, so the size has to be exact. Microfiber is the invisible option under tight clothing, and satin falls well but marks any seams.

Be careful

Hand wash in cold water with neutral soap, squeezing without twisting. If you use a washing machine, a mesh bag and a delicate program, always with the hooks fastened so that they do not snag the lace.

Dry horizontally and in the shade. And store the cups facing each other and not folded into each other, because the fold in the molded cup is permanent.

Alternating between two or three pieces significantly extends the life of all of them: elastane needs a day to recover its shape.
